Sustaining Wealth Across Generations:
Rethinking your approach for family success
Tuesday August 9, 2016

60 minutes
What do families – and motivated multigenerational family businesses – do to ensure that they successfully sustain wealth now and in future generations? What can research covering more than 600 high and ultra-high net worth individuals and families tell us about effective strategies and actions that have worked over time? How do families and individuals avoid erosion of wealth over generations, the well-known “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves” progression that prevents many family businesses from reaching the third, fourth, or even later generations of prosperity?
These experts, to be joined by a family business shareholder, will explore why this happens, illustrate some key findings on barriers to great communication within the family and the business, and suggest actions that can ameliorate fear, procrastination and, ultimately, failure. They’ll also tackle ways to start the conversation about wealth and its privileges and responsibilities with the next generation, and outline an approach that relies on three pillars of family governance – experiential learning, mentoring, and financial education.
